Groom's death is being investigated as a homicide after police arrested his wife, 62-year-old Sheldon “Shelly” Wilson, on charges of second-degree murder and tampering with a deceased body.

According to court records, Wilson allegedly told police that Groom died in March while she was at work. She said she returned home and found him unresponsive in bed.

Police said Wilson did not report his death at the time. Instead, according to the arrest affidavit, his body remained inside the home for months before Wilson allegedly dismembered the remains and concealed them in two black plastic totes.

CSPD said the investigation began Sept. 19, when Wilson and her daughter, Jamie Kishbaugh, went to the Police Operations Center and reported that Wilson's husband was dead inside her home in the 4000 block of Tappan Drive.

Officers responded to the home and found Groom's remains inside the residence, according to the affidavit.

Police said one tote contained decomposing flesh and what appeared to be a human leg inside a trash bag. A second tote contained a tightly packed black trash bag wrapped in silver duct tape.

Investigators also found a small mattress with dark staining that appeared to be biological matter and blood behind a privacy fence in the backyard, according to court records.

The affidavit details several previous calls for service at the home. Police said 18 calls had been made to the residence since December 2024, including several involving allegations that Wilson was abusing Groom.

A family member also reported to police in December 2024 that Wilson had allegedly made statements about wanting to kill Groom.

On Sept. 17, police were called to the home after a family member reported concerns about Groom's whereabouts. Wilson allegedly told officers that her husband had started outpatient hospice care and would return home every few days.

According to the affidavit, Wilson later told detectives she had a history of hurting Groom while intoxicated and had been drinking the night before she found him unresponsive in March.

Wilson allegedly told detectives she covered Groom with a blanket and went to work after finding him unresponsive.

The affidavit says Groom's body remained in the living room for about a week before Wilson later moved and concealed the remains.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on Sept. 21 and identified Groom on Sept. 24. The coroner's office will determine his official cause and manner of death.

CSPD is continuing to investigate the case.
